How the walkability score works

The score runs from 0 to 100 and asks one question: can you run your daily errands on foot from here? It counts the places people walk to most, in nine categories: groceries, restaurants and bars, shops, cafés, banks, parks, schools, bookshops and libraries, and culture.

A place earns its full points within a 5 minute walk (400 m), fades to 12% of them at 20 minutes and stops counting at 30 minutes (2.4 km). Walking distance follows the street grid, so a sparse grid of long blocks and cul-de-sacs costs up to 20% of the score.

  • 90+Walker's Paradise: daily errands do not require a car.
  • 70+Very Walkable: most errands can be done on foot.
  • 50+Somewhat Walkable: some errands can be done on foot.
  • 0+Car-Dependent: most or all errands need a car.

Places come from the Overture Maps Foundation and streets from OpenStreetMap, the same open data for every country, so a score in Lagos means the same as one in Lyon. At North American addresses the score lands within a few points of Walk Score; the accuracy page has the comparison and the methodology has every weight.
